A simple wave of an iPhone or a Droid might replace the old-fashioned swipe and sign ritual of credit cards, reports Bloomberg/BusinessWeek. AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile have reportedly partnered with Discover Financial Services – the fourth-biggest payment network after MasterCard, Visa and American Express – to transform smartphones into mobile payment systems.

Some early applications merging mobile phones with credit payments already exist, including a device that turns an iPhone into a credit card reader.

BusinessWeek was not able to elaborate on the technical details of the new system, which will apparently be tested in Atlanta and three other cities. Read full post…

Sallie Mae is not moving away from its student loan efforts, but it is branching out into additional financial product offerings, starting with certificates of deposit. Broadband speeds to UK homes are growing ever faster but many people are still not getting the broadband speeds they’ve signed up for.

Research by communications watchdog Ofcom shows that the average fixed-line residential broadband speed has increased by more than 25% over the last year, rising from 4.1Mbit/s to 5.2Mbits/s.

While that’s good news, more and more broadband customers are seeing far lower speeds than the headline rates they signed up for.
